Hi and Welcome.

Of all Christmas traditions, cookies are by far my favourite part.

Being German, in my family there has always been a lot of christmas cookie baking. No German Adventskaffee without its Bunter Teller (colourful/varied plate). There have to be lots of different cookies on the plate, and with few exceptions they have to be homemade.

It’s always the same types of cookies we bake, but from one year to another nobody remembers where that great recipe from last year was from. And we start all over again with the browsing and comparing. At my parents’ place there’s a huge folder with magazine supplements and clippings. Too many versions of the same cookies, tweaks or new exotic ones that we never try. So this year I decided to make a list of the most important cookies, find and compare recipes, and put them together in a little collection to be given to my mother and sisters for the holidays. I love the idea of having the same collection of recipes in all of our kitchens.

As the idea was growing in my head, I wanted to share it with more people and began to build this little blog. It’s an Advent calendar of sorts; one recipe every day of December until Christmas.

Most of the recipes are German Christmas classics, some of them with minor tweaks, like cutting the sugar down a bit, or using different flours. I’ve included some “international” recipes too because they are favourites of mine.

If you try some of the recipes or think you have better ones, or want to share one of your family’s classics with me, get in touch. I’d love to hear about your Christmas cookies.

Happy baking and calm and peaceful holidays.

Jana.
